Starting your riding journey begins with two simple steps:
Complete a Basic Handling Skills Assessment with Freedom Rider Trainer and receive your certificate.
Pass the Motorcycle Theory Test - Get prepared by taking these online practice motorbike licensing tests.
Whether you are brand new to riding or already have some experience, we will teach you the essential skills needed to feel confident and ready for your Basic Handling Skills Test.
Never ridden a motorbike before? Book a Learn to Ride lesson before your assessment to gain the skills and confidence needed for a successful outcome.
WHEN & WHERE
We currently offer Basic Handling Skills Test in two easy to reach locations in Tauranga:
VTNZ - Off Hewletts Road, Mt Maunganui
Bayride Motorcycles - Tauriko
SUNDAY - VTNZ - Mount Maunganui
Basic Handling Skills Tests and Training Sessions are available after 1pm every Sunday.
SATURDAY - BAYRIDE - Tauriko
Basic Handling Skills Tests and Training Sessions are available from 9am on alternating Saturdays.
OUR COURSES
BASIC HANDLING SKILLS TEST
This is a test only and is for riders who can already ride a motorcycle confidently. You must be comfortable using a clutch, changing gears, and operating the indicators and have watched the preparation video bellow or have taken training elsewhere, so you understand what is required to pass.

TRAINING AND BASIC HANDLING SKILLS TEST
Suitable for riders who can already ride but want to improve your chances of passing? This session is for riders who can already use a clutch and gears but would like practice before the test. We will take you through the test step by step, making sure you know exactly what's expected. Perfect for returning riders or those with off-road riding experience only.

ABOUT THE BASIC HANDLING SKILLS TEST
The Basic handling skills test consists
of four stages:
Basic turn and stop
Figure of eight and park
Linking figures of eight
Increased speed and emergency stop
Each stage is broken down into varying combinations of the following tasks:
Move off
Straight ride
Corner
Stop
Park
In completing the tasks above you will be assessed against the relevant assessment items below:
looking in the correct direction
signalling correctly
making head checks before changing position
lateral position of motorcycle
control of motorcycle
using appropriate speed
parking observation
parking movement.
